Rachel had a visit today with the pediatric surgeon and she will soon (February 13th) need surgery to have a dermoid cyst removed. She has had this cyst on her colar bone since birth and we've known that it would need to be removed at some point.
Recently, the cyst has gotten infected several times and her pediatrition told us it was time. I realize it is a very minor surgery but the thought of my sweet little being put to sleep makes me sad and a little scared! Please pray for her and us on February 13th that every goes well. Thanks for praying and we'll keep you posted. She was so brave and such a big today when she saw the doctor - I'm so proud of her!

Sleep
Those of you who know me, know I love to sleep. Before we had children, I decided I would sleep in as much as possible (as if I could bank up sleep!)because I knew once kiddos came along sleep (or at least sleeping in) would be a thing of the past. I know that was not exactly the spiritual way to respond to laziness but I confess that I did and I must say I enjoyed sleeping in while I could.
Sleeping in is now a thing of the past. Occasionally, we sleep until 7 and that is a late morning. A few days after we brought Rachel home I was so sleep deprived I remember thinking what have I gotten myself into! I soon decided she was worth loosing sleep over :) It took a few months of "sleep training" and she was in a great sleeping routine - in fact, her sleep habits were every mom's dream. Around 3 1/2 months she was sleeping 12 hours at night, and taking 3 naps a day (2 of her naps lasted about 2 hours each and the third nap was usually 1/2 hour to and hour - for those of you counting that is about 17 hours a day and she did this until she was over 1 year old). It was dreamy - and not just for her. :)
This past August, Miss Anna joined our family and she si quite a different sleeper! From the beginning she didn't take naps very well and had a hard time soothing herself to sleep but she started to sleep well at night. At least for the first couple of months. I was so excited when she went 6 hours, then 8 hours then 10 hours at night...I thought it was going to be so much easier than Rachel. Boy was I ever wrong. Anna is now 5 1/2 months and she is all over the place. One night she will wake up after 6 hours of sleep and then next night she'll sleep 12 hours (the latter not as often as I would like). And I'm very fortunate if she takes a one or two hour nap every day. The poor little one just doesn't like to sleep. If only I could convice her that she would feel so much better if she slept! I must say that she is still sweet even if she doesn't sleep.
I've finally decided that there is always going to be some sleep issue with someone in the house. Whether it is Rachel waking up at 5:30 every morning (thankfully she hasn't done this in a while), Anna sleeping only an hour during the whole day, Mom and Dad waking up in the middle of the night because we hear imaginary cries...the list could go on. Maybe if I just accept this simple fact - that someone will always have a problem with sleep I could get a little more shut eye myself rather than try to figure out what to do about it! okay, off to bed soon - sweet dreams!

Storytime
The Patel sisters and the Brinn sisters
Do these things belong to me??
Tricycle
Rachel got this Radio Flyer classic tricycle from Grandma and Papaw (as well as a Melissa and Doug Art Easel). She is learning to pedal and does get quite frustrated at times but I'm sure she'll get the hang of it in no time. She has been sick this week so hasn't been able to be outside. Hopefully soon!
Christmas Morning
We were at my parents on Christmas morning and here are a few pics from that morning. Rachel understood a lot more this Christmas and it was fun to see her get excited. Before she opened her gifts we had her help give others their gifts and I loved watching her get so excited about giving rather than just receiving.
Gingerbread House
In spite of all of the chaos that surrounds Christmas, I really made an effort this year to do some fun things with Rachel. We talked more about baby Jesus and what Christmas really means this year now that she is understanding a little more. And I acutally managed to use our advent calendar more than half of the 25 days. One of the days we made this Gingerbread house. We bought a kit from Trader Joes (one of my new favorite places!) and enjoyed some time together. She was very excited about it as you can see.
